Snorri Sturluson
One of the most famous authors amongst Scandinavian sources is Snorri Sturluson, the Icelandic medievalist, writer and leader of the Icelandic parliament who lived in the 13th century. He is the author of Snorra Edda, also known as "Prose Edda".
Although Snorri's work predates Eddukvæði, it still preserves the essence of traditional Scandinavian poetry through keeping the heitar (poetic names) and kenningar (poetic terms) in educational lists in the appendices of his works.
The most beautiful works of medieval Scandinavia possess a unique feature of alliteration and metric, preserved to this day in the Icelandic language through the fornyrðislag (law of ancient words). These rules are, moreover, used in Nordic religious practices, such as Forn Siðr, practiced up to the present day.
On Primary Sources
The Scandinavian primary sources are the manuscripts written in Norrœnt mál (ancient Nordic language), mainly between the 10th and 13th centuries, still containing the poetic practices of the Skáld (masters of poetry), such as the Codex Regius - the manuscript which contains the poems of the Edda (Great Grandmother's Wisdom), documented as AM 738 4to, technically named Eddukvæði (Great Wisdom of Edda) and popularly known as "Poetic Edda".
Also, it contains the Heimskringla (The Terrestrial Globe), which records the lives of Scandinavian kings and the origins of some dynasties - such as the Ynglingar, who founded Sweden.
When we state that these sources are not mythological, it means most of them are religious and/or historical accounts, made at the time of the event or a few years after they took place.
